The CBC (Basic Common Cycle) was created by the University of Buenos Aires in 1985 with the aims of providing a basic integral and interdisciplinary training; developing critical thinking; consolidating learning methodologies and contributing to ethical, civil and democratic education.
The specific objectives pursued by the CBC are for students to:
Consolidate their knowledge and skills in the use of various languages and in the handling of information.
Get orientation concerning the choice of an accurate course of studies, from a personal standpoint and taking into consideration the future professional position in connection to the community
Assume the learning responsibility so as to get started in the permanent university education.
Become aware of team and interdisciplinary work.
Get started in the area of scientific knowledge related to different disciplines and in the interpretation of its philosophical, epistemological and methodological foundations.
Acquire an interdisciplinary vision of the different areas of knowledge.
Get acquainted with real problems through a systematic and methodological approach.
In order to meet these objectives, the CBC constitutes the first cycle of university studies. It serves an orientative building upon the aforementioned objectives. In this way, students will be able to commit themselves to a specific course of studies after a year of experience in the university system and after having access to several opportunities of getting to know the area of study and application of the different specialties as well as the real working possibilities for graduates.
The courses provided in the CBC are organized from a disciplinary and interdisciplinary approach. Taking the latter into consideration, students are exposed to the study of topics and analysis of problems of diverse nature. Such variety of approached is aimed at helping students overcome the encyclopedic and disarticulated conception of knowledge and at elaborating an integral and open vision of problems concerning our reality.
The CBC is made up of 6 (six) compulsory subjects, 2 (two) of which are common to all courses of studies. Another 2 (two) subjects depend on the orientation embraced by the course of studies chosen. The three orientations are: "Social and Human Sciences"; "Biologic and Health Sciences" and "Exact Sciences, Technology and Design". The other 2 (two) subjects are specifically related to the course of studies chosen.
